We want to create a Best of Naples and Collier County that was fun, entertaining and untainted by commerce. We didn’t care if a merchant advertised with us or not. If they were worthy, they made the list. If someone did advertise, however, we thanked them by including them as a Best.
At least we’re honest.
And, instead of having readers vote, which is a process rife with skullduggery, we sent our award-winning writers and editors out in search of the Best. We came up with a list that’s far from all-inclusive. There are just too many great things about this place we call home. So if we missed a few, we apologize. We’ll try our Best again next year.
Harolds Place Halloween-2010
In the meantime, enjoy our 2010 efforts.Cheers.
Things are looking up around Southwest Florida.
OK, so the winter was pretty lousy(where's that global warming, anyway?), but houses are selling, business in general is picking up and everyone seems to have a bit more bounce in their step.
After all, the sun still shines almost every day,and the best beaches and fishing holes are still just minutes away. The sun still sets over the Gulf every night, and the local political theater-of-the-absurd still keeps us entertained.
And of course there's always something new to check out: restaurants, shops and stores, festivals and fundraisers, entertainers and service providers.
To keep up on what makes Naples and all of Collier County so special, Florida Weekly went on the hunt for the Best of... well, everything.
Best place to stop before and after the beach? We got it. Best summer reading list? Check it out.Best use of taxpayers' money? Yep. Best sports fans? We've got the 411. It's all here in our Bests. Have fun. We sure did.

BEST WAYS TO CELEBRATE NAPLES
>> The Great Dock Canoe Race
>> The Mullet Festivalat Stan’s Idle Hour
>> Swamp Buggy Races
Anywhere else, festivals focused on mud and mullet (the fish, not the hairstyle) and some tricked-up canoes would seem, well, rednecky. But these beloved Collier County traditions manage to pull it off in high style. Proof? The Great Dock Canoe Race, the Mullet Festival at Stan’s IdleHour in Goodland and the Swamp Buggy Races have entertained generations of residents and visitors for decades. And we know many well-to-do Neapolitans who wouldn’t miss these let-your-hair-down festivities.

BEST HOMEGROWN PRODUCT>>Swamp cabbage
First off, let’s not even consider the proliferation of grow houses for all the correct reasons—plus, those crops aren’t grown naturally. And agribusiness grows lots of stuff, but that’s business. But recall the Florida State Tree, the swamp cabbage (aka, sabal palm or palmetto palm). Delicious cooked or as hearts of palm salad, this is a long-time staple in the Sunshine State. Recipes are available on the Internet, but as it is the state tree, you aren’t supposed to cut it down. Go figure.
BEST PLACE TO VENT>>Immokalee Road and I-75
Affecting a vast number of people is the interminable pace of construction, the unmarked swerving lane changes, the stoppage of time and traffic that make the intersection of Immokalee Road and I-75 the place to amaze yourself, your friends and family with the language you may well spew —words raw enough to stagger a salty sailor and send your mom running for that bar of soap. This Sisyphean experience in existentialangst is where madness lies. Even Bob’s Barricades wants it over.
BEST POWERBROKER>> Ed Morton
Whether it’s economic development orlocal politics, Ed Morton is always behind the scenes and in the know. If it’s good for the Naples and Collier County community, he’s involved, bringing people together and making things happen.
BEST CASE FOR PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION>> Naples City Councilman Sam Saad
Maybe you just forgot that your driver’s license was suspended. And maybe being photographed behind the wheel by the daily newspaper was just bad luck. But maybe, too, a working knowledge of Collier Area Transit might have avoided the whole mess. Just weeks ago, CAT added the first of three new 35-foot buses. They run seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and stop at both Naples City Hall and the Driver’s License Bureau. You need only arrive early at the stop and signal the driver by raising your hand.
BEST USE OF TAXPAYERS’ MONEY >>The Golden Gate Parkway overpass
We rarely get what we pay for, especially when government —local, state or federal — is involved. The Golden Gate Parkway overpass at Airport Pulling Road is a notable (and welcomed) exception. Since it opened nearly three years ago, the $38.3 million project has eliminated traffic snarls at the intersection and routinelysaves motorists 10 to 15 minutes during heaviest commutes. Now, if only Collier County’s traffic planners could tackle that health care thing…
BEST ELEPHANT IN THE LIVING ROOM>>Collier County impact fees
When building was booming, Collier County raised its impact fees on new construction. Now, with building still on the slow side, those fees remain the highest in the state — more than double those of any other county in Florida. Builders and developers say that to build a medical office complex here, the impact fees cost more than the bricks and mortar.
Looks like the fees from new construction that were to benefit the county are actually limiting new construction, thus hurting us. Collier County needs to find new methods of paying for growth, in order toallow some. Otherwise, it’s the construction industry equivalent of redlight cameras, stopping those who’d like togo, and penalizing those who do. Speaking of…
BEST NANNY GOVERNMENT CONUNDRUM>> Redlight cameras
The ever-increasing intrusion of nannygovernment gets most everyone’s shorts in a knot. This isespecially true of the year-old introduction of red lightcameras. There are now 19, with five more to come. More than25,000 no-point, $62 citations have been written, amountingto nearly $1.6 million in revenue, a third of which goes toAmerican Traffic Solutions, which provides and maintains the cameras atno charge in return for a share of the revenue.
People are irked, but we’re payingmore attention to stopping at traffic lights. Issues oflegality, the state eventually wanting some of the revenue, and pro and con red light camera legislation making its wayaround Tallahassee are not yet resolved. But the fact remains thatit’s illegal and dangerous to run a, red light. Sorry, bustedis busted,
whether by Robo Cop or Officer Friendly.
BEST PHOTOGALLERY,WEEKAFTER WEEK>> The Society pages ofFlorida Weekly
OK, so it’s shameless self-promotion,but whether it’s a black-tie dinner or a boots-and-Stetson hoedown,Florida Weekly photographers are there, capturing the fun andfund raising and the people who make it all possible.Throughout the year,we feature photos of people comingtogether for galas and auctions, barbecues and festivals, grandopenings, golf tournaments and fetes of all kinds. Florida Weekly’sSociety pages have become the go-to spot for social gadflies to seethemselves and their friends at their festive best — and forthose who didn’t attend, to regret their decision.
BEST ELEPHANTS FOR ALL TO ENJOY>>The Chardonnay pachyderms
Those precious elephants in front ofChardonnay restaurant on U.S. 41 don’t belong to the public,of course, but they do seem to be a town favorite. What pubpublicly funded art there is to be found in our area issadly limited. Whatever happened to the proposalfor gateway art near the bridge coming into Naples from theEast Trail?
There is, however, a way cool, trulypublic installation at the entrance to the parking garage on EighthStreet South. The city of Naples’ first installment of publicart through an ordinance passed in 2006, “Cambier’s Quilt” consists ofmore than 100 dichroic glass squares that pivot with thewind changing color and wind, reflecting their surroundingsfrom every angle. The 12-foot-tall work was created by artist Mark Fuller of Palm Beach Gardens. More!
BEST CAMERA, NOT AT A RED LIGHT>> Greg Kahn
The National Press PhotographersAssociation picked Greg Kahn of the Naples Daily News as2010 Photo journalist of the Year for a small-market newspaper. Mr. Kahn’sbody of work submitted to the judges includedphotographs of Naples prosthetic specialist Dr. David Trainer fitting a newface on a woman who had been disfigured in a car accident, agroup of third-grade boys eyeing a voluptuous Fernando Boterobronze sculpture during a field trip to the Naples Museum of Art, mourners at the funeral for GuerlineDamas and her five children, whose husband and father had been charged with their murders, and a self-proclaimed “girly girl” getting in shape for Marine Corps basic training. We call thatgetting the picture.
BEST PICTURES TO STIR THE CONSCIENCE>>“Images of Hope: Immokalee – Looking Forward Looking Back”
Brynn Brujin’s searingphotograph s depicting the lives of Immokalee’s migrantworkersare at once disturbing and uplifting. The conditions in whichthese people toil and live haunt you long after you closethe covers of this beautiful, 195-page book that was produced bythe Community Foundation of Collier County as part ofits Immokalee Initiative. Ms. Brujin’s stunning imagesvalidate William Faulkner’s observation that, “Man will not merelyendure: he will prevail.”

BEST DO-GOODER>>Erica Hinson
She’s a native, a community leader inOld Naples, a long-time ER nurse at NCH and director ofquality management for the Neighborhood Health Clinic. Ifyou’re ever lucky enough to be invited to one of Ms. Hinson’sparties, don’t miss it! The consummate Neapolitan, her liferevolves around what is best for Naples.
BEST ANTI-HERO>>Eddie Filer
At 85 years old, The Sage of the Swamphas his own blog, “The Social Critic,” at HYPERLINK“http://www.naplesnews.com” www.naplesnews.com. Mr.Filer is proudly gay, ant-war, very pro individual rightsand flies his liberal flag with sometimes reckless abandon. Ifhe doesn’t tick you off, and he does a lot of people, yougot tato love him for his courage to address the stickyissueswith intelligence and clear language.
BEST COMMUNITY WATCH DOG>> Penny Taylor
Termed-out member of the Naples CityCouncil, Ms.Taylor first made the news with her opposition to theCoastland Mall. While unsuccessful, she found her voice, gathered support andgot elected. Never a middle ground forthis gal, she is the champion of the Old Guard of Naples.
BEST AGITATORS>>See Anti-Hero and Community Watch Dog
Eddie Filer and Penny Taylor, ifnothing else, puta Maytag to shame for agitation.
BEST MAFIOSO LOOKALIKE>>Tony Marino
Tony Marino doesn’t blend. At 6-foot 3inches,this Brooklyn native has an undeniable presence. When you firstmeet him or look at his Marino Group logo, you instantlythink Scarface, Sopranos or the Godfather. But don’t let the pinkieringorblack Cadillac fool you. In reality, Mr. Marino isinvolved in so many charities and on so many boards, he’sknown more for his generosity and dedication to communityservice than for his business. In fact, some people who’ve known himforyears don’t know what his business is (maybe they’re afraid to ask).
For the record, Mr. Marino is not inwaste management or olive-oil importing. The Marino Group, which consists of Regency Transportation and Marino Parking, provides chauffeured transportation and valet parking. Whenhe’s not volunteering his time and services, he’s in hisoffice, seven days a week, making sure the Marino name is living up tohis high standards.

BEST FRIENDS NOT ON FACEBOOK>> “Friends of” organizations
Before social networkingtook over, it was easier to know who your friends were. Instead of justsending out or responding to an e-mailed friend request, friends usedtolike the same things, support the same causes and help outwhen there was a need. Just like these “Friends of” organizations do.Because that’s what friends are for.

BEST GREEN ARTIST>>Ken Andexler
Countless painters, sculptors, poetsand the like have been inspired by the natural beauty ofNaples — the powdery beaches, the vivid tropical foliage, the
breathtaking sunsets. But it takes anartist of slightly different vision to be inspired by ourseaside city’s road debris — cigarette butts, cans, bottles, nails, hubcaps, lone shoes and thousands of odd items that are tossed or that fall from cars and trucks intheindustrial park north of Pine Ridge Road. Ken Andexler rideshis bicycle or walks everywhere he goes, keeping his head down as he scours the shoulder of the road for bits andpiecesof trash to turn into art.
His first sculpture was composed ofsome 450 pieces of road debris and was exhibited at The vonLiebig Art Center; several other pieces were displayed at TheBike Route last year. In a perfect world, there wouldn’t beany roadside debris. The next best thing, at least in thisparticular area of North Naples, is an unassuming, refreshingly creative and resourceful recycler.
BEST BOUQUET CROP OF ACCESSORIES>> Wilma Boyd
Whether she’s mentoring youngprofessionals, contributing her time, talent and treasure todozens ofcommunity organizations or running Preferred Travelof Naples as its president and CEO, Wilma Boyd blooms where she’splanted. She’salso known for her collection of jaunty lapel flowers.Mrs. Boyd has alovely blossom to add just the rightdash of colorand style to every suit in her wardrobe. Ardent supportersof the Florida Everblades hockey team, they’re at every homegame at Germain Arena, proudly wearing team jerseys plus matching hardhats cleverly outfitted with flashing, spinning goal lightsthat they illuminate for every Everblades score. ’Bladesgames just wouldn’t be the same without them.
BEST WE’VE-BEEN-PLAYED-LIKE-A-VIOLIN>> The Chicago Cubs
The myth of the Chicago Cubs coming toNaples for spring training had us all duped for a while. Come on now, after decades of sold-out crowds in Mesa, Ariz., the Cubsplayed us off Mesa to get what they wanted from Mesa. Ifanyone believed that the Cubbies were really coming, well, youjust caught a dose of mass hysteria. But it was fun while it lasted, you know, like playing “what if.”
BEST HOMETOWN ATHLETE>>Trevor Moore
When he was 7 years old, Trevor Moorejoined alearn-to-sail program through Naples Sailing Center. And he was hooked. While at Seacrest Country Day
School, he competed in threeworld championships in an Optimist dinghy; before graduatinghighschool from Community School of Naples, he sailed atthe world-class level in the Laser and Club 420 classes. Hewas named College Sailor of the Year and just missedqualifying in the 2007 Olympic sailing trials. Trevor is nowcampaigning to make the 2012 Olympic team. We’re thinking itshould be a breeze.

BEST LOCAL ATHLETE WITHOUT A SPONSOR OR COACH>> Bart Bailey
“You don’t swim fast. You just swimslow, and you just keep on paddling, keep on keeping on…” That’saccording to commercial crabber Bart Bailey. After two waves swampedhisopen boatin the Gulf and he had to jump clear to avoid getting tangledin his traps and drowning in the blue, Mr. Bailey, 50, swam for anafternoon and all night before finally crawling ashore on BarefootBeachnear The Ritz-Carlton early one morning in April.
BEST CURE FORINSOMNIA>> Blue Martini
There have been a lot of stories, someapproaching the status of urban legends, of perfectly normal folkshaving a drink there and forgetting most everything after that untilthe next day. Investigations so far have shown that those who went tothe hospital didn’t have any traces of alien atoms from the periodictable of the elements. It could be that the club’s 3-ounce martiniwould put down the boys on “Mad Men” if they imbibed on an emptystomach.
BEST SIGN OF INTELLIGENT LIFE>> The North Naples Country Clubmarquee
It’s a marquee that lives “in the moment.” On the west side of U.S. 41 between Immokalee andVanderbilt Beach roads,North Naples Country Club owner Mike Combs postshisopinions, politicsand humor in 6-inch tall letters. “Don’t be blue: nodrugs in the drinks here,” was the message regarding awell-publicizedissue at another local bar (see above). Weighing in on a, nationaldebate, heposted,
“If you don’t think immigration control is a problem, ask the American Indians.” And losingelectricity, post-hurricane, “FPL, where are you?” got the lights backon. His is truly a sign of the times.
BEST BARTENDER>>
Tough to single out just one, as thereare many and they come in so many varieties. There are thebottle-tossers, the gruff ones, the genteel ones, the foreign ones, theshot-and-a-beer ones, the I-don’tcare if-you-live-or-die ones. But thelong-reigning Queen of Bartenders is BJ. For many years she held courtat the Riverwalk, but nowadays you’ll find her tending at AliceSweetwater’s new location on Pine Ridge Road in the Crossings shoppingcenter. She knows just about everyone, and in a moment she’ll know you, too. Just tell her everybody sent you.
BEST (AND ONLY)SINGING AUCTIONEER>>Jerry Conti
He’s part of a band called Men O pause, and he’s anin-demand auctioneer for charity events all over town. Nowhe’s combining the two talents to- become the area’s onlysinging auctioneer. His calling, he says, is to “maximize bidderpotential while captivating the non-bidders, who are 90 percent ofattendees.”Live auctions will never be the same. Details:537-2399
BEST MONKEYING-AROUND MASCOT>> Giver
This lovable, 6-foot-tall orangutanappears on behalf of Charity for Change at local schools and promotesgiving as away of living to area students. That’s a serious lesson toimpart, but Giver makes it fun.
BEST UNDERUTILIZED ACTORS>>Megan McCombs and Vic Caroli
The quality of community theater canvary wildly,we agree, but when it comes to The Naples Players, thereare two actors we’d go to see in any show, because they’re so terrific.Unfortunately, they’re not cast very often.
Megan McCombs is the head of KidzActfor the Players, which takes up a lot of her time and energy. We firstsaw herin “The Lion in Winter,” where she knocked us out with herfierceness. She also wowed in “Cabaret,” and is on-stage through May 13as Lady Bracknell in “The Importance of Being Earnest.” Don’t get uswrong:She’s doing a great job with the kids (we loved the KidzActversion of “Thoroughly Modern Millie”). We’d just like to see thetalented Ms.McCombs on stage a little more often.
Ditto for Vic Caroli, whorecently played a laid back psychiatrist in “Crazy Mary.” And as achild’s imaginary playmate in “Moon Over the Brewery,” he stole theshow.

BEST PLACE FOR A FIRST DATE>> If you can find it…
There’s a certain chickee hut on thesouthern beaches of Naples —we can’t say exactly where, because gettingthere requires trespassing. A lovely, covered, quiet and serene place, withwater, it seems to be never used. It’s a lovely spot with justthe right amount of risk involved to add even more the goodkind of tension to a great first date.
BEST PLACE TO BREAK UP>>Online
Such unpleasantness. In this ageof non-confrontation some think a text message, cold as asurgical“-ectomy,” is best. But for full frontal assault with
ve vengeance and humiliation arequisite, you just can’t beat Twitter or Facebook. While not exactly aphysical place, itis a viral place, and the community wide impact ismassive. Not for the faint-hearted.

BEST SWAMP WALK WITHOUT THE MUCK>> Big Cypress Bend
Winding through the Everglades is anarrow thread of forested swamp approximately 20 miles long and three to five miles wide called the Fakahatchee Strand. “The Amazon of North America,” it’sthe main drainage slough of the southwestern Big Cypress Swamp. Beneath a protective canopy of bald cypress trees flows a slow-moving, shallow slough that’s warmer than the ambient temperature in the winter and cooler in the summer. The buffering effect of the slough and the deeper lakes that punctuate it shield the forest interior from extreme cold temperatures, and this fosters a high level of rare and endangered tropical plant species.
This vast wilderness that is the Big Cypress National Preserve is a mosaic of royal palm stands, cypress domes and grassy prairies dotted with wild bromeliads, native ferns and orchids. Resident wildlife includes a number of threatened and endangered species. The Florida panther, wood stork, Florida blackbear, mangrove fox squirrel and Everglades mink have all been seen within the preserve.
Access is limited, but at Big Cypress Bend, on thenorth side of U.S. 41 about seven miles west of State Road 29, visitors can walk along a 2,000-foot-long boardwalk to experience the beauty of a magnificent old growth cypress forest. Trust us: It’s worth the trip.
