Florida Keys & Key West vacation planning starts here

Welcome to our islands! A dream vacation, yes, and getting here is most important.

Instead of spending your entire trip on one key, spend a few days in the Upper Keys, Middle Keys and Lower Keys. Each area is unique and has much to offer.

Our drive-to islands are rich in arts & culture, yet if you crave the wild outdoors, our guided eco-tours, walking trails, environmental centers and a plethora of green travel initiatives will satisfy.

The Florida Keys are a chain of about 1700 islands in the southeast Florida. They begin at the southeastern tip of the Florida peninsula, about 15 miles (24 km) south of Miami, and extend in a gentle arc south-southwest and then westward to Key West, the westernmost of the inhabited islands, and on to the uninhabited Dry Tortugas.

The islands lie along the Florida Straits, dividing the Atlantic Ocean to the east from the Gulf of Mexico to the west, and defining one edge of Florida Bay. At the nearest point, the southern tip of Key West is just 90 miles (140 km) from Cuba.

For those of you that have never been here before, the Florida Keys are a 106 mile long chain of islands that begin at the very bottom of Florida's mainland. They are often referred to as America's Caribbean.

These islands are surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Gulf of Mexico on the other. The Keys offer some of the finest fishing and diving in the world and are the home of the only living Coral Reef in the Continental United States.

For land lubbers there is also plenty do. The Keys are also the home of some of Florida's finest parks and sanctuaries and there are plenty of places to shop for island wear, home decor and much more. Of course, you can always just sit next to the water and sip on a Margarita while listening to your favorite Jimmy Buffett song.

Tips on navigating the Keys!

Key Largo is the first island south of the Florida mainland, and Key West is approximately100 miles south of Key Largo. In between are the lovely islands of Islamorada, Long Key, Marathon, Big Pine Key and many more. Key Largo is about a 1 1/2 hour drive from Miami Airportand Key West is roughly another 2 hours drive.

When using any Key West guide, you will see the abbreviation "m.m.". This stands for "mile marker". Mile markers are the small green signs on the side of the road that represent what mile you are located at on the overseas highway (US 1). Mile markers go lower as you go further south. The beginning of Key Largo is located at mile marker 107. Key West begins at mile marker 5.
