Everglades City's history began with the earliest settlers approximately A.D. 200. Calusa Indians lived on shell mounds found throughout our area. In the 1800's Indian tribes escaped into the Everglades to avoid being sent to reservations in the West. In 1860 the Civil War began and escaped slaves hid in the swamp and lived with the Indians. Others who were trying to avoid the civil War also made their lives in our area. Soon homes, a trading post and a town called Everglade began. In 1923 Barron Gift Collier created the Tamiami Trail and Collier County began. Soon he changed the cities name to Everglades City making it the capital of his new county.
