A Day on the Links with Drop-Kick

Naples golf at its best at the annual Sam Snead’s Tavern Golf Outing started off as usual, a group of want-a-be-golfers, gathering in at Sam Snead's Tavern at 7:30 Sunday morning for a Bloody Mary’s Breakfast and serious man talk (side betting just to keep the day interesting).

My team however didn’t show! Smart, they waited till later in the day to get their Buzz on. Drop-Kick knew better. After a couple of Bloody Mary’s it was clear to me or less clear-I forget, it was time to head to The Strand Golf Club.

Ah, Sam Snead's Team is on the driving range limbering up dedicated as ever. We were on a mission. A mission to win it all. There they were, Big Larry, Big Jim and Smooooooth Casey chumping on the bit ready to go. I on the other hand, was still feeling the effects of Bloody Marys as I warmed up but Drop-Kick too, was ready to go.

We got into our golf carts and raced to the six hole for a shotgun start to begin the day. This format is simple, best ball.

The heat of the day was on us earlier than expected. I was sweating like I was in a wet T-shirt competition. Could it be the Bloody Marys?

We played with reckless abandon knowing full well that only the top three teams are in the money. Wouldn’t you know it, we finished tied for 4th place out of the money.

We shot 7 under par 65 that put us at 59 after the handicap ... 50 was the winning score. Okay! Maybe next year will be our year. Forget the Bloody Mary’s….Maybe I'll try mimosas.

Team Sam Snead's retreated to Sammy's for our Annual Naples Golf Banquet. For starters appetizers and drinks, no bloody Mary’s please. The crème du la crème, Prime Rib. What a meal, what a day. My belly was full as I loosen my belt thinking back to my first drive on the fifth hole or was it the sixth hole, Well it was a great drive a beauty as it were .

As locals, we try to take advantage of the beautiful weather ( though hot in the summer) and play as much as possible before the snowbirds return. Typical golf rate during season are $80 to $250 and more per round.

When prices go up, it's time to put the clubs away, not to return until summer.

Who doesn't look forward to next summer! Golf passes become available to 20 PGA courses for $30 - $40 dollars . Not bad for Locals!. I will say there is a heaven where dreams come true called Naples Florida. Home to pro and want-a-be golfers with endless days of summer.

Sam Snead’s Team look forwards to next year’s tournament, when one team will again be awarded bragging rights to say “We are the Best”, but who will be on next years team?

It will take another year of calling Sam Snead’s home in comradeship and heavy drinking to decide who is going to play. One thing for sure, Win or Lose, a good time can be assured for all.

Well, I guess it’s time to get the ole fishing pole out and go after that one that got away.
