Day Trip: Weeki Wachee

By Ellen HellerWater LIFE Publisher

Sometime during my most impressionable years, probably in the 1960’s, I saw an ad, TV special or maybe just a colorful bumper sticker wired on to a station wagon for Weeki Wachee Springs inFlorida.

Forty years later, 13 years of them in Florida, I finally went to Weeki Wachee Springs, and dragged my husband with me. Today it is a State Park but back in the day it was privately owned. The underground springs keep the tropical water a constant 74 degrees. The pond that the springs form had several water slides pouring adults and children alike into the crystal clear water. The swimming area neatly overflowed and created a slow moving Bahama-blue river that served as another way to enjoy the water, by tour boat.

Although the landscape and buildings had seen better days, Weeki Wachee Springs State Park is far better than the glitz, glam and over the top commercial feeling new theme parks are offering families elsewhere in Florida today.

Genetically Modified Food

By Dennis Vasey

In a subsequent "Wall Street Journal" article Bill Tomson reported: "FDA Panel Supportive of Gene-Altered Salmon, but More Research Needed."

The fish story is part of a larger global trend. Driven by a growing population and higher food prices, genetically altering food can offer several benefits, scientists say. A crop can be engineered to provide larger yields, to be more tolerant of pesticides or to better resist drought or pests. Sometimes, they may be cheaper to produce. Many countries are racing to take advantage of genetically modified (or GM) food.

Industry experts expect Chinese GM rice and corn to be produced in two to three years. South Africa grows GM corn. Brazil and Pakistan grow GM soybeans and corn. India has been growing GM cotton for several years. Farmers world-wide pay roughly $9 billion annually for GM seed, according to seed-industry estimates. Monsanto Company of St. Louis, Missouri is the largest developer of genetically modified crops.

Salmon farmer facing prosecution after pesticide kills thousands of fish

Rob Edwards, Environmental Editor

26 Sep 2010

One of Scotland’s leading fish farm companies may face prosecution after thousands of salmon were accidentally killed by an overdose of an unauthorised and highly toxic pesticide.

The Sunday Herald has learned that investigators found significant quantities of pesticides banned for use on fish farms, during raids on boats used by Hoganess Salmon, run by the Lakeland Group at Burrastow near Walls on the west coast of Shetland.

Excessive amounts of the pesticides, meant to kill the lice that eat away at salmon are thought to have been used to douse the fish, causing mass deaths and destroying other marine wildlife.

Brouhaha over GM salmon Seafood News Commentary

By Fiona Robinson, SeaFood Business editor in chief

24 September, 2010 - In the late 1990’s when the news surfaced that AquaBounty Technologies was developing a genetically modified (GM) salmon there was little talk about the market ramifications.

Fast-forward 12 years, and now that AquaBounty’s GM Atlantic salmon, called AquAdvantage® Salmon, is nearing approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, a firestorm has erupted over what could be the United States’ first GM animal approved for human consumption.

While there are many issues at hand, what vexes most consumer groups is the labeling issue. Should a GM farmed salmon be labeled as such? I’ve always been a proponent of giving the consumer as much information as possible and let them choose. But the FDA says it can’t require a different label under current food-labeling rules — the GM salmon doesn’t have any major differences between it and traditional farmed salmon.

U.S. retailers are already mandated under country-of-origin labeling regulations to show if a seafood species is wild or farmed and the harvest origin. But how would they add GM to that label? I can see the display case tag now: “farmed salmon, previously frozen, combination ocean pout and chinook salmon, Canada.” That’s a sure sales winner.

And how are retail counter staff going to keep the GM product from not being mixed in the case with the traditional farmed salmon? Maybe a whole new branded product name for the GM salmon can be developed to make it easy to differentiate in the market. The seafood industry loves tinkering with names to make a species more attractive. How about “salpo” (salmon + pout)?

Clearly, there are a lot of issues to be fleshed out, and the FDA has its hands full listening to all of those opinions. Hopefully, the original product, which is supposed to make closed-containment farmed salmon more economically feasible, doesn’t get lost in the brouhaha.

Senators want review of modified salmon ended

A company wants approval of genetically modified chinook salmon .

By Lyndsey LaytonWednesday, September 29, 2010Eleven senators, mostly from coastal states, urged the Food and Drug Administration Tuesday to stop moving forward with the approval process for a genetically modified Atlantic salmon.

Shorelines

By Dennis Vasey

Our estuaries, found at many of our local shorelines. Formed where rivers meet the Gulf of Mexico or Naples Bay, my recollection is that there are no two identical estuaries. Some are small, others cover a very large area,

What takes place at the shoreline?

In the estuary, river and tidal currents play very important roles in mixing the lower and upper layers of water. This estuarine circulation is a crucial factor determining estuary productivity.

The freshwater from rivers is lighter than saltwater, so it has a tendency to stay on top of the saltwater. If the estuary is deep enough, the saltwater from the sea will travel up the estuary by passing under the freshwater, while the freshwater going down the river will stay above the saltwater layer and enter the Gulf of Mexico or Naples Bay.

By following the saltwater wedge, some marine organisms can advance farther into the estuary. Thus, if not blocked artificially, some marine species can be found very far upstream in an estuary and in the summer there is an abundance of biological activity in the estuary that provide high-quality habitats for many species of wildlife.
