Dolphins help save tired dog stuck in canal on Marco Island - VIDEO

A dolphin swims in the same Marco Island canal where dolphins drew attention to a stranded dog in the water. * By Paul Gessler, NBC2 * Naples Daily News * Posted February 24, 2011

MARCO ISLAND — Some persistent dolphins are being credited with saving a dog that ran away on Marco Island. The dog's owner said he had been missing for 15 hours before the dolphins alerted neighbors.

Cindy Burnett, who lives off South Bahama Avenue on Marco, said her 11-year-old Doberman named Turbo disappeared late Sunday night after his gate was left open. And that's when Burnett and her sons went looking for him.

Fifteen hours later, dolphins got a neighbor's attention, alerting them to the stranded dog in the water.

Sanibel shuffle: Beloved restaurants move, great locations pop up new eateries

* Chelle Koster Walton* Naples Daily News* Posted February 24, 2011

If you’ve ever spent any time on Sanibel Island beaches, you’ve no doubt heard the term ,"Sanibel Stoop," which refers to the shell-bent stance of shell-seekers on its famously shellacious beaches. Say that 10 times!

The Sanibel Shuffle? Now that’s something else: the phenomenon that takes place pre-season in the restaurant biz. So once you’ve collected your bagful of shells on the beach, get in on the restaurant shell game here, where, especially in the recent economy, a number of restaurants have moved, changed owners or opened anew.

Red-snapper tagging begins

BY JORDAN KAHN, STAFF WRITER February 12, 2011 12:05 AM

Posted in: Fishing | Tagged: snapper ban

THE ATLANTIC OCEAN -- From 25 miles offshore, the storm looked like a black tongue of night swallowing the western horizon, the direction a crew of three scientists and four fishermen would have to motor to make it back to the safety of Ponce de Leon Inlet.

Their trip earlier this week was the maiden voyage of the Florida East Coast Cooperative Red Snapper Tagging Program, a study being conducted by Florida's Fish and Wildlife Research Institute.

Commercial and recreational anglers will soon be able to receive tagging kits at training seminars on participating in the program.

Collaboration between government scientists and fishermen represents a sharp turn in their debate over red snapper bans, which fisheries managers have called "the most controversial" situation in South Atlantic fisheries management history.

No S'mores: Men charged with feeding marshmallows to wild animals on airboat tour

* By TRISTAN SPINSKI* Naples Daily News· Posted February 23, 2011

Two Everglades City airboat captains found out last week that feeding snacks to wild animals is illegal.

Florida Fish and Wildlife officers issued citations to them after undercover agents observed them feeding marshmallows to raccoons and alligators.

Posing as tourists on two separate airboat rides with Everglades Island Boat Tours, FWC investigators observed Graham Potter, 67, of Copeland, feed marshmallows to raccoons, and Randal Daniels, 72, of Chokoloskee, feed marshmallows to alligators, according to reports.

"Unacceptable behavior and unlawful behavior is not tolerated," Ferraro said. "It seems like the message is still not being taken seriously."two-dolphin.jpg

Someone is filming a Pole-Dancing Housewives of Naples Reality TV Show
- and we tell you how to audition!

The Stage Door

By Chris Silk

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, I was a fan of reality TV. I once even had copies of the first seven seasons of "The Real World" on VHS and hunted eBay for "The Real World" collectibles.

No more. I even gave up the "Project Runway" habit a couple seasons ago. Please don't speak of "Survivor" or "American Idol." I can honestly say that I haven't watched more than a few minutes of either.

Reality TV is not good. Then again, so are most sitcoms and the majority of network TV. Ugh. I miss "Deadwood," "The Wire" and "Misfits" from the UK.

But I swear by all that I hold dear that I would TOTALLY watch a pole-dancing housewife reality TV show if it were produced in Naples. This show is called "House Cats" - and IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH FOUR-LEGGED FELINES.

Here's how you audition:

Naples council OKs changing code to allow alcohol sales in city until 2 a.m. Mondays

By JENNA BUZZACCO-FOERSTER

Posted February 14, 2011

NAPLES — Naples City Council will begin the process of changing its code to allow for the sale of alcohol until 2 a.m. Mondays.

City Council this morning gave city staff the go-ahead to look into revising the city code that governs the hours which bars and restaurants can sell or serve alcohol. The decision comes about a month after the owners of Paddy Murphy’s asked council to consider a change that would align Naples laws with those in unincorporated Collier County.

Naples city code states that it is unlawful for any bottle club or vendor to sell, or serve, alcohol between 2 a.m. Sunday and 7 a.m. Monday.

Florida Keys fishermen won’t endorse controversial federal catch share program

Keys fishermen spoke out Thursday against a controversial federal program designed to put an end to overfishing and boost stocks.

BY SUSAN COCKING

Keys fishermen said a resounding “no” at a public workshop Thursday in Key Largo to a controversial federal proposal to use catch shares to manage the commercial snapper-grouper fishery in the South Atlantic.

The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council says nine stocks of snapper-grouper from North Carolina to the East Coast of Florida are either overfished or about to be depleted to unhealthy levels. Since 2008, the council has been discussing the use of catch shares as a tool to stop overfishing and boost stocks.

SI GOLF Ranking: Rethinking golf's top 10

Tiger Woods went a year without a victory. He won the Australian Masters in November 2009, then disappeared from golf for five months. He returned to tie for fourth at the Masters and the U.S. Open, but he also missed a cut, withdrew from the Players and didn't win another top 10 for the rest of the Tour schedule. Somehow, though, he remained No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking. He was finally passed on Nov. 1, by Lee Westwood, who had won a grand total of one tournament since ... November 2009.

Best time for shelling on the islands comes during winter, extreme tides

By JEFF LYSIAK

A longtime sheller and docent at the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum. Harold "Smoky" Payson, led the Jan. 14 “Friday Lunch Hour at the Museum” program, a PowerPoint presentation and question-and-answer session focused on “Finding & Identifying Sanibel Shells – From the Second Floor to the Beaches and Back.”

During the 60-minute discussion, Payson talked about how and where to look for some of the island’s most common species. He also offered tips on how to identify specimens both in the field and once they are cleaned and prepared for placement in a collection.

"This is just about the best time of the year to go shelling," said Payson, who discussed the two major types of shells — bivalves and gastropods — and how seasons of the year impact the species found.

Participants learned how winds, tides, the phase of the moon and the geographic orientation of the island — east to west — impacts shelling.

Sweet Potatoes Become America's New Sweet Heart

    Jan 1, 2011By Tara Fitzpatrick

Orange-fleshed and vitamin-packed, sweet potatoes are trending big time in foodservice. Here are facts, recipes, operator trends.

    UBS Chicago (IL)

"I definitely think sweet potatoes have taken the place of your basic potatoes. Whether the sweet potato is fried or baked, people view sweet potatoes as a healthier option. It's an old option with a lot more new variations now. Sweet potatoes are so versatile. You can use them in savory or sweet dishes, and you can reach an array of clientele, because it's used in so many different countries."I love sweet potato fries: the sweetness that they have, and the sugar content in the sweet potato makes it crisper when it comes out of the fryer. When I make sweet potato fries, I pair them with different sauces — Spicy Thai Peanut Sauce, Homemade Ketchup, and Chipotle and Cilantro Aioli are some of my favorites.

Clearwater debuts first branded live lobster

    By SeafoodSource staff

    Seafood News Supply & Trade

28 January, 2011 - Clearwater Seafoods on Thursday announced that it has developed a way to brand its live lobster.

The Bedford, Nova Scotia-based company said it has created a plastic sleeve that fits over one of the lobster’s banded claws. It is a safe and humane method that allows the company to put its brand directly on the lobster’s claw and into the consumer’s hands, according to Clearwater. Patents are pending on the plastic sleeve.

The first market to receive the Clearwater-branded live lobster will be China, just in time for the Chinese New Year, which kicks off on 3 February.

'All lobster' aren’t created equal, and consumers often don’t know what they’re getting until they crack the shell,” said Clearwater CEO Ian Smith. 'Canadian hard shell lobster is among the finest in the world. But at Clearwater our passion for wild, premium, sustainable seafood means that we must go the extra mile to ensure our customers know that they’re buying the very best.

“In today’s crowded global marketplace, if you have a superior product you need to do everything possible to stand apart from the crowd,” added Smith.

    Meaty lobsters subject of research

Last Updated: Wednesday, January 26, 2011 | CBC News

Processors are looking for lobsters full of meat, but other consumers want different qualities. (CBC)Researchers at the University of Prince Edward Island are trying to determine how to know if a lobster is full of meat, in the hopes of boosting prices for the industry.

As the fishery stands now, a lobster is a lobster is a lobster. It is difficult to separate lobsters for their different qualities. But not all markets want the same thing. Processors want lobsters that are full of meat, not one that is still recovering from moulting. But some American consumers want a soft-shelled lobster that is easy to get into.

    Interval training

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Eating healthy, exercising regularly, quitting smoking, and keeping our blood pressure and cholesterol at their optimum levels, are the best heart-healthy steps we can take

What kind of physical activity is most effective in preventing cardiovascular disease?

What is commonly referred to as a cardio workout raises our heart rate and keeps it elevated for a period of time. The good thing is that you don’t have to be a marathon runner or an Olympic athlete to get a good, heart-boosting exercise. Any brisk activity for at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week, will be beneficial in strengthening the heart and lungs, and improving the body’s ability to use oxygen. As long as you move at an energetic pace, you’re on the right track — no pun intended.

What’s an even better approach? More and more trainers are now including interval training in their program designs because studies have shown that interval training can save time and increase fat burning capabilities, an obvious win-win for most people.

Interval training is a type of physical training that involves bursts of high intensity work. This high intensity work is alternated with periods of rest or low activity, the eponymous intervals.

Provided below are three examples of the most common interval workouts completed by exercisers and athletes alike.

    Interval Variation I: Standard

  • 3 – 5 minutes warm-up (light ride, low intensity, gradually increasing at the end of the warm up period)
  • 1 minute moderate or high intensity followed by 1 minute low intensity (repeat 6-8 times)
  • 3 – 5 minutes cool down (light ride, low intensity, gradually decreasing by the end of the cool down period)

    Interval Variation II: Pyramid

  • 3 – 5 minutes warmup
  • 30 seconds high intensity, 1 minute low intensity
  • 45 seconds high intensity, 1 minute low intensity
  • 60 seconds high intensity, 1 minute low intensity
  • 90 seconds high intensity, 1 minute low intensity
  • 60 seconds high intensity, 1 minute low intensity
  • 45 seconds high intensity, 1 minute low intensity
  • 30 seconds high intensity
  • 3 – 5 minutes cooldown

    Interval Variation III: Sports Conditioning

  • 3 – 5 minutes warmup
  • 2 minutes moderate or high intensity followed by 2 minutes low intensity (repeat once)
  • 30 seconds high intensity followed by 30 seconds low intensity (repeat four times)
  • 60-yard sprints (or 10 seconds) followed by 90 seconds rest (repeat 6 - 10 times)
  • 3 – 5 minutes cooldown
