SELLING OUT PARADISE NAPLES — Companies could one day promote their brands on public beaches, parks and other assets owned by taxpayers if pending legislation is approved.WHOA! SLOW DOWN, DON’T GO SO FAST!
"Anything the state of Florida owns that we could possibly sell," Rep. Slosberg told the Fort Lauderdale Sun- Sentinel recently. "I’m an entrepreneur, I know how to generate revenue," he added confidently, speaking to the Miami Herald. No, that does not mean selling off state employees, in spite of what some may wish. But it could mean selling ad space where they work and on what they drive. Could Rep. Gary Aubuchon and his 159 colleagues in the state House of Representatives have been a tad hasty in tightening the belt? Relationships Cost Money"/> The practice of school bus advertising has spread to a number of states. Some states already allow advertising inside of school busses as well. As the popularity continues to spreads the controversy surrounding the practice does as well. Critics say that exposing impressionable young children to ads that appear to be endorsed by their educators is problematic. Have advertisers and state governments gone too far in moving forward with ad campaigns or should this practice be seen as simply another avenue to expand marketing efforts, increase visibility and maximize revenue? Even if we accept the fact that we need to alter this paradise to make it better able to meet our requirements, two questions come to mind: (1) When do we decide that we have enough? (2) Are these alterations really profiting us as a people?
Should advertisers have a moral responsibility
FLORIDA BAY — A year after National Audubon Society scientists noticed nesting numbers were down, the roseate spoonbill appears to be back.Halfway through this year's breeding season, scientists tell The Miami Herald the numbers are up. But it's too early to tell what the future will bring.
Scientist Jerry Lorenz recently made a tour through the mangroves to check spoonbill nests. He says he is hoping last year's abandonment of Florida Bay may have simply been a blip. The pink birds nest on mangrove islands in the Florida Keys. Lorenz says the birds only built 69 nests in the bay last year. That's a third of the nests the birds built the previous year, which had been an all-time low. So far this year, at least 160 nests have been spotted. Scientists say roseate spoonbill appears to be back
