Start at the south end of South Beach at Nikki Beach.
Most of the clubs in South Beach have an outdoor area - if you wanted to stay inside, you would have stayed up north!
Outdoor platform beds are great for lounging, and you can dance under the stars at the beach. Does it get any better than that?
Then stroll up the beach to Wet Willies, where you have your choice of about 17 different frozen margaritas and can look out to the ocean from the balcony bar.
The Hotel (yes, that's it's name - it used to be the Tiffany and they still have the diamond design on the floor at the entrance) has a great rooftop lounge if you want something a little quieter. Further uptown, the Catalina has some nice poolside seating outside of the bar and the Gansevoort has a huge rooftop lounge.
Beautiful people line the white-sand beach and clear-blue Atlantic ocean water. The beach is a melting-pot of European jet-setters, latin-flavors and snowbirds eagerly applying SPF to prevent third-degree burns. You will see an extremely diverse crowd at SOBE.
Just a few words of caution. South Beach is not Disney. If you are looking for a place to bring small children, you'll probably be happier in Orlando. Like Vegas, it's really more for adults.
Do your research before you go, use the South Beach Local bus to get around (it's only a quarter) and have a wonderful time!
The prices are outrageous but what SoBe offers is worth the price of admission. What makes this place interesting is the architectural and people atmosphere, which is unique.
Another unique aesthetic attribute of South Beach is the presence of colorful and unique stands used by South Beach's lifeguards. After Hurricane Andrew, Architect William Lane donated his design services to the city and added new stops on design tours in the form of lifeguard towers. His towers instantly became symbols of the revived City of Miami Beach.
There is probably no better collection of building in late Art Deco and Art Moderne style anywhere else on the planet. And the version here is especially regional, with brightly painted facades and spacy looking signs and towers.
In addtion to the Art Moderne, the very differently style Versace Mansion is a must see as well -- both as a piece of crime history and as a tribute to his memory.
I love South Beach, Miami Beach, and the Miami metro area. But, you should really know what you're getting into. You should research the area a lot before you go. This website offers a lot of good advice. There are several good books available on the area, too.

South Beach Miami Night Clubs
The big clubs at night are expensive for sure. Most are a $20 cover with overpriced drinks. But you can just as easily walk down Washington and go to the $5 cover places and hear fun music while dancing on top a fish tank. It has everything you just need to do it right.
Wet Willie's serves great tasting frozen daiquiris, with generous portions of alcohol, at fair prices. The bar is located on Ocean Drive in South Beach. All I can say is "call a cab". This place is epic! If your ever in Miami check it out! It's the perfect place for South Beach!
If you could pour Miami Beach into a plastic cup, it would be a Call a Cab at Wet Willie's. Bright red, smooth, delicious and utterly dangerous.
It was slightly intimidating walking in, given the armed cops sitting at the door - guess the place gets a little rowdy.... We headed upstairs and chatted with the super-friendly bartender (who says service is dead in Mia??), who let us try little tastes of the dozens of cleverly-named flavors. My beverage of choice was a creamsicle - a mouthwatering mix of mango and pina colada. Yummmmmmm.
Not sure I'd spend much time inside the bar itself - the crowd was a little on the sketchy side, but hell, who needs to hang out? Just grab your drink and head to the beach. That's what makes this place so special.
Some of the boys went with pina coladas mixed with call a cab - but that's just asking for trouble. Call a cab involves 151 - and I'm not getting near that, at least not in the daytime.
The large bevvie is $10, and I was found that surprisingly reasonable. I was expecting $15, $20 maybe. We picked up our plastic and headed to the beach. Definitely worth parking your towel near here, so you can sip these frozen dreams in the bright Miami sunshine. Heaven!
